Embargo Act
The Embargo act was also one of the reasons that the Industrial Revolution Era occurred. Jefferson sent out the act because he wanted to stop all foreign trade because Britain and France were seizing ships, so he thought that this would mess up their economies. But this plan worked out oppositely. The US was in an economic depression. Now that this act was sent out they could not get any supplies from Britain or France. So they had to produce their own foods.
War of 1812
The war ended this year and the nation did not feel split anymore and they felt a sense of unity. The war showed that Jefferson's idea of limited government could not meet the needs of the nation's crisis. Now the Republicans who supported state rights, now promoted federal rights.
After the War of 1812, a document called the Rush-Bagot Treaty was put into use in 1817. This treaty set limits on the number of naval ships that were allowed to pass through the Great Lakes.
Henry Clay and the American System
Henry Clay had the intentions to help the nation grow and help the economy in every part of the country, while increasing the power of the national government. He raised tariffs, made a new national bank, and made improvements to land. Unfortunately, congress denied this law even though it would have improved everything majorly.
The Monroe Doctrine
Since so much was going on in the Americas, James Monroe was concerned about the possibility of European expansion in America. The doctrine was a safe guard to colonization. on December 2, 1823, the Monroe Doctrine was passed and it stated that the US would not interfere with any existing European colonies. But North and South America were off limits to them in Europe and could not claim anymore land in America.
