Missouri and Florida
Missouri
In 1819, Missouri asked to become a state. The people living in Missouri believed in slavery and the ways that people treated them. But James Tallmadge who was a representative wanted to abolish slavery in Missouri. So to solve the argument between the two groups of people, Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise. The compromise stated that Maine would become a free state and Missouri would become a slave state. This was to balance out the amount of slave states and free states. The counting would now be 12 free states and 12 slave states.
The Missouri Compromise drew a line west of the southern boundary of Missouri - 36*30' N latitude. This line was meant to be placed there to show Americans that above the line slavery was not allowed, but below the line slavery was allowed.
Florida
During the Industrial Revolution era, the US claimed that west Florida went to them with the Louisiana Purchase, but Spain knew that east florida was theirs and they claimed west Florida. In 1818 Andrew Jackson invaded east Florida and took over two of their forts. After this invasion, the Adams-Onis treaty was made and it gave east Florida to the US. Two years after this treaty was made, the Spanish lower their flags in Pensacola and St. Augustine.
